COSCO São Paulo tanker conducted a January safety drill training in the East Pacific. The drill was included firefighting,
oil spill disposal, ship abandonment and security drills.
In the oil spill emergency drill, Chief Engineer Qian Zhiming served as the on-site commander. He organized
personnel to measure the oil tank, close the valves, ensure the normal operations of the equipment in the
engine room, etc., and he found the cause of the tilt; the chief officer organized the personnel to close
all watertight doors and windows and the water hole on the deck. The officer reported the location of
the fuel leak. The ship was seriously tilted due to the ballast operations of the barge, and the NO4
left fuel tank was leaked. The simulation operation was carried out according to 3.2.1.5 and Table
10 of SOPEP and the emergency operation manual. The fuel was transferred and the chief officer
performed pressure during water-carrying transfer operations, personnel are organized to collect and
control oil spills by using oil absorbent pads and oil absorbent socks, and the lifeboats were ready for
launching and simulating oil spill removal.
