According to an official from the Jiangsu Maritime Bureau, there are tens of thousands
of ships sailing and crossing between the ports along the Yangtze River every day in
the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River. More than 1.1 million ships entered and
exited the port last year. The large amount of oily sewage, domestic sewage and
garbage generated by ships pose a serious pollution threat to the Yangtze River. At
the same time, there are 179 dangerous goods berths in the area, and more than
300,000 tons of dangerous goods are passed every day. Once a pollution accident
occurs, the consequences are unimaginable. The situation of water pollution prevention
and control of ships is very serious. So it need arrange a large amount of oil absorbent
pads and oil booms for cleaning the oily sewage, domestic sewage and garbage.
Since today, Jiangsu Maritime Bureau will conduct a one-month “Special Inspection
of Port and Ship Pollution Prevention” in the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River and
the coastal jurisdiction under its jurisdiction to reduce pollution caused by ships on
the Yangtze River Jiangsu section and Jiangsu coastal waters.
In view of the current safety hazards of small tankers, the small-scale tanker of less than
1000 gross tonnage to the port will maintain a site inspection ratio of more than 20%.
Once it is found defects in pollution prevention, it will be required to correct or limit the
time before sailing, and all ships with major defects will be detained. In this inspection,
Jiangsu Maritime Bureau will focus on the inspection of pollutant receiving facilities, anti-pollution emergency equipment and equipment, pollution accident emergency plans and
pollution prevention emergency drills of dangerous goods terminals in the jurisdiction.
